Historical information

The Claremont War Memorial (originally referred to as the Claremont Soldiers Memorial) was built next to the council chambers on the corner of the Perth-Fremantle Road (later Stirling Highway) and Bay View Terrace from Donnybrook stone with marble inserts on a rough cut granite foundation. This is set on a cruciform concrete base and is designed like a miniature Gothic church, the central spire and flying buttresses are topped with trefoil finials.

The design was overseen by a committee of well known architects (Summerhayes, Cox and Cameron).

The contract for the memorial which was erected in honour of the men and women of the Claremont district who had voluntarily enlisted in the Great War (World War I) was signed on behalf of the Memorial Committee and the foundation stone laid by General Sir Talbot Hobbs on the 24th September 1922.

The tender to build the memorial was awarded to Wales and Gillies (Returned Soldiers' Monumental Masons) at a cost of £672. The erection of stone wing walls with a wrought iron gate and chain fence cost an additional £170. The memorial was financed by public subscription and a £20 donation from the Town of Claremont.

The memorial was dedicated by the Chaplain-General, Archbishop Riley and unveiled by the Governor, Sir Francis Newdegate on the 25th March 1923.

Over the years the memorial was damaged by moisture and vibration from passing vehicles. It was restored at a cost of approximately $10000 in 1994 and was rededicated in October 1995, 73 years to the day after it was first erected.
