Perspex sweetheart brooch depicting rising sun badge - red
c. 1940Perspex sweetheart brooch depicting an Australian Army rising sun badge, designed for a soldier to send to their mother.
It is shaped like a teardrop with a flat base and is suspended by a metal ring through a hole in the apex attached to a gold metal safety pin.
The golden rising sun badge sits at the broadest part of the brooch. The bayonet tips and the details around the King's crown are in a deep burgundy, while the writing on the scrolls below are in purple. A circle above is bordered in silver and contains the word 'Mother' written in bronze on a gold background.
The front surface has been polished smooth with rounded edges and appears pearlescent due to the clear Perspex above the white painted base.
The reverse is mostly white with the exception of the back of the circle and parts of the rising sun badge, which are gold. There is some cracking to the surface due to age.
This brooch is one of three purchased together, one of which has been made from the same mould and differs only in the colours used. The third is a semicircular brooch.
Perspex trench art brooches such as these were both made by and for servicemen to send as gifts. Perhaps this brooch and its variation were made more professionally to be purchased, rather than handmade by the soldier themself.
An article about the making of these Perspex trench art jewellery pieces is attached as a supplementary link.
