Sweetheart brooch made from modified rising sun badge dated 1916
1916Gold coloured Australian Army rising sun badge whcih has been converted into a sweetheart brooch by the addition of a matching gold metal brooch fitting to the reverse.
The date, 1916, has been added to the front of the badge with the numerals '19' on the left and '16' on the right, all made from shaped silver metal.
A flat, rectangular piece of gold metal has been attached to the reverse to cover the area where the brooch fitting was joined to the badge. Only the pin, hinge and catch are visible. It also covers where the numerals on the front have been secured.
The area on the badge where the maker's mark would be is obscured by the flat piece of metal.
Many military badges and insignia were converted into jewellery such as brooches, pendants, lockets and earrings to be gifted to loved ones as keepsakes.
This particular brooch has been well made, either by a soldier with good metalwork skills or a professional jeweller.
