Perspex sweetheart brooch depicting rising sun badge - blue and gold
c. 1940Perspex sweetheart brooch depicting an Australian Army rising sun badge, designed for a soldier to send to their loved one.
It is semicircular in shape, following the outline of the rising sun badge inside. The top part of the badge including the bayonet tips and the King's crown are gold in colour, while the lower part is pale blue with write writing.
The painting is not well rendered, with irregular edges and green paint visible between the gold spikes and around the crown.
The front surface has been polished smooth with rounded edges and appears pearlescent due to the clear Perspex above the white painted base.
The reverse is mostly black and has a metal brooch fitting embedded within the Perspex for attachment. There is some cracking to the surface due to age.
This brooch is one of three purchased together, two of which have been made from the same mould and differ only in the colours used. This particular brooch is not as well made as the other two. Perspex trench art brooches such as these were both made by and for servicemen to send as gifts. Perhaps this brooch was made by the soldier themself, whereas the others were made more professionally to be purchased.
An article about the making of these Perspex trench art jewellery pieces is attached as a supplementary link.
