Painted timber War Savings Group plaque in form of thermometer
c. 1917 - 1919Painted timber War Savings Group plaque in form of thermometer which tracks the amount raised from the start of the campaign (20 May 1917) until the completion (4 November 1919).
At the top are two crossed flags - Union Jack on the left and a Blue Ensign on the right - with foliage around them and a King's Crown in red and gold above.
Underneath the flags are the letters 'L.C.C.S.S.' painted in black in a curve, and below that the words 'War Savings Group' in red.
The depiction of a thermometer has the bulb at the base and the capillary tube extending upwards, painted in grey with a black outline. The scale with dates (in red) and amounts (in black) extends out either side of the central tube. The words 'Commenced 20th May, 1917' are written in black in a curve at the bottom of the plaque, with some silver grey decorative swirls above. About halfway up is written 'End of First Year' in red.
The word 'Closed' is written in red above the final amount - £956 - and the date '4/11/19'.
The reverse of the plaque is plain and has a length of cord at the top for suspension.
This plaque was purchased in Perth, Western Australia, but there is no information regarding what 'L.C.C.S.S.' stands for, or if indeed the plaque is from Australia. If it was Australian, it might be expected that the blue ensign flag would have white stars on it, representing the Australian flag.
What is clear is that the plaque was made to show the progress of fundraising efforts by a local War Savings Group during World War One.
