WEAVING, SHEET

Overview

These sheets were part of a set of home linen made from scratch by an Italian family from Umbria who migrated to WA in 1949. Flax was grown on the family property, spun and woven into a bedspread, 2 sheets and hand towels.

(a) A single strip of woven linen, raw edge at one end and tacked hem at the other. Section set 80mm from the ends at is a 50mm wide fancy weave of diamond pattern in a lighter colour. The length of this piece suggests it will be cut in the middle and sides joined together .

(b) is made of two lengths partially joined for 260mm. One piece has a 70mm tacked hem. The diamond pattern section suggests that a & b would be joined together to make one sheet.
