DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE PRESERVING FRUITS BOOK
A fawn coloured text book with a colourful selection of fruit, around text on the front cover. It has 100 pages of black text recipes with some hand written notes pinned to the pages. The back cover has an advertisement with text over a picture of a woman in a floral dress and a man in a suit. The man is showing a table of Vacola good to the woman who is clutching her hands in excitement.
This book, produced by the Victorian Government Department of Agriculture was used by Olga Beales to assist with the preservation of food at their family home on the orchard at Roleystone (c1925-1956) and the orchard at Seville Grove. (c1956-1970s). The book was produced by Fowlers (established 1915) an Australian company, based in Victoria, that manufactured jar sterolising units, including domestic sterolisers.

Preserving and pickling excess food, such as fruit from the orchard, was an important skill for any household if they wished to preserve food for long time storage in a time when cheap accessible refrigeration was limited as was easy access to shops selling fresh food.
