Historical information

This St John Ambulance badge with case was worn by Miss Carmen Lorenz, a member of the Armadale Womens Emergency Corps (AWEC) which operated in the local area from 1941-1945. AWEC was formed by Constable Denzil Roy Fletcher (based at the Armadale Police Station 1939-1948) with the help of his wife Sheila and Mesdames Harris and Enright during World War Two. The local volunteer unit was made up of primarily young local women who were training in first aid, how to carry an injured person on a stretcher and how to use firearms including heavy machine guns. The St John Ambulance badge was issued as part of their first aid training. Members totalled nearly 50, aged 16-20, recruited not only from Armadale, but, Kelmscott, Byford and Gosnells.
