The original Australian Baseball League (ABL) commenced in October 1989, representing Australia's first professional baseball league. The first ABL game was contested between Perth Heat and Adelaide Giants at Parry Field Baseball Stadium in Perth on 27 October 1989. At the time, the league replaced the Claxton Shield as the top baseball competition in the country, with eight teams from Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. During the original ABL's 10-year existence, the Perth Heat were the second-most successful team in the league, winning the title twice in 1990–91 and 1996-97 and finishing runner-up a further three times.
