Returned Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia (RSSAILA) Life Subscriber (LS) membership badge
c. 1940 - 1952Returned Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia (RSSAILA) metal and enamel membership badge with attached Life Subscriber (LS) clasp.
It is in the shape of a shield and features a gold-toned circular centre showing three service figures (representing a sailor, soldier, and airman/airwoman), surrounded by a blue enamel ring reading 'RETURNED SAILORS, SOLDIERS & AIRMEN'S', all on a white enamel background.
There is a red enamel banner at the bottom containing the text 'IMPERIAL LEAGUE AUSTRALIA', in gold lettering.
The badge is surmounted by a gold King's Crown which is covered by a Queens' Crown clasp in bright orange with gold edges and the gold initials 'LS' inside.
The reverse has the original issue number of the badge 'Z83222' impressed, under which the maker's name 'AMOR SYDNEY' is embossed. There are two copper lugs for attachment.
The organisation was originally formed in 1916 as the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA), later incorporating airmen (RSSAILA) in 1940 before officially becoming the RSL in 1965.
This badge has the King's Crown underneath the clasp, meaning it was issued during the reign of King George VI, It therefore dates to between 1940 and 1952.
The 'LS' clasp attached to the crown at the top of the badge means Life Subscriber. The holder of the badge paid the lifetime subscription rate instead of the yearly rate.
The letter 'Z' on the reverse indicates that the membership badge was originally issued in Queensland.
A stick pin with 'LS' attached is also held in the collection and came with this badge. However, it has the RSL logo on it, meaning it was issued post-1965, and the letter 'W' indicating it was issued in Western Australia. It is therefore unlikely that these two items were issued to the same veteran.
