Fundraising medallion sold to support Thames Red Cross Day - 1915
1915Circular, bronze fundraising medallion sold to support Thames Red Cross Day in 1915.
It has a raised border around the circumference on both sides. On one side, the words 'RED CROSS DAY 1915' are written in raised lettering, while the reverse features a laurel wreath tied with a bow at the bottom. The central area is plain.
There are two fused parallel rings at the top at right angles to the flat medallion through which either a chain or pin could be threaded for attachment.
There are no maker's marks.
This medallion commemorates a 'Red Cross Day' held in Thames in 1915 to support wartime relief efforts.
Such medallions were often sold or given to donors during fundraising campaigns for the Red Cross Society during the war. The reverse looks as though it could have been engraved with a recipient's name, but has not been.
'The Times' newspaper of Saturday August 14 1915 refers to a 'Thames Red Cross Flag Day' and the sale of flags from Richmond to Reading and entertainment of wounded soldiers.
