From there Gilham 'joined up' and he fought in WWI at the Battle of the Somme. He was wounded and on his return he met and married Ellen (Nell) Lavinia Jennings in Fremantle in 1919. Nell had moved with her parents from Victoria to Kalgoorlie and then to Fremantle. A professional pianist she played at the 'flicks', where she met Fred. The couple had two children: Merle (b.1924) and Robert Arthur (b.1922).

Gilham was a Claremont Councillor from 1934-1941.

Gilham rented a dairy from Nobel Mounsey at 45/47 Claremont Crescent where they then resided. The dairy was sold just before pasteurisation was introduced and the family moved to Webster Street Nedlands. Frederick Gilham became the owner of Western Motors, importers of Volkswagons, after WWII.
