HOBBS, JOHN CR.
Five black and white photographs of John Hobbs who served as a councillor at the Town of Claremont between 1908 and 1912 and again between 1922 and 1927. Photograph a) is taken in partial profile, Hobbs in wearing a dark jacket and waistcoat with a light coloured shirt and tie. He has a full moustache and slicked back dark hair. Printed beneath [Hobbs 1908-09]. Photograph b) is comparable to photograph a). Hobbs is however, positioned to face the left on a slight angle. Printed beneath [Hobbs 1909-11]. ] In photograph c), Hobbs is wearing a dark jacket, waistcoat and tie with a light coloured shirt. He is similarly in partial profile towards the left. Printed beneath [Hobbs 1911-12]. In photograph d), Hobbs is facing directly toward the camera, wearing similar attire to photograph c). The lighting in this photo is reduced with shadowing across the face and Hobbs' suit. Printed beneath [Hobbs 1922-24] Photograph e) is also dimly lit, with a dark background. Hobbs is wearing a dark three piece suit with a patterned tie. His hair is greying. Printed beneath [Hobbs 1924-27]
John Hobbs was born in London. He was first married Elizabeth Sarah Scammell in 1891and together had a son Alfred John (b.1892). When Elizabeth died, Hobbs married Elizabeth's sister Mary and had children: William Frances (b.1902), Herbert Charles (b. 1903), Elsie Mary (1905), Edwin Henry (b.1910), Hilda Elizabeth (b.1908) and France E. (b.1908). The family lived at 72 Bay View Terrace which was called Teffont.
Hobbs was a Member of the Claremont Bowling Club for 35 years, being President for 22 years. He was a member of the Claremont Yacht Club and past Commodore, founder of Silver Pan Confectionery Company in West Perth which became Plaistowes and the former Director of W. Drabbles Ltd.
Hobbs was a Councillor of Claremont from 1907-1913, from 1923-1924 and Mayor from 1924-1927.
