Overview

B/W print. (a) Hubert and Caroline (Kit) de Waal on the front verandah of 14 Reserve Street Claremont. Hubert, dressed in dark trousers and shoes, long-sleeved white shirt with loose tie and dark waistcoat, is seated on a chair. He has a cigarette in a holder in his mouth. Caroline is sitting on his knee. She has a dark skirt with an ornate clasp at the waist and dark shoes. A lighter blouse is gathered at the round neck with a ribbon tie and white lace collar. The brick wall is behind them, with the door surround on the left, and the shadow of the verandah post and decorative bracket on the right. (b) Marie Claire (Molly) de Waal on the footpath at the bottom of the front steps at 14 Reserve Street, Claremont. She is in Iona Presentation Convent uniform of checked dress with dark tie at the hips, white collar, cuffs and front facing, white socks and black shoes. Details of original balustrade, verandah posts etc in the background.

Historical information

Hubert John (Bumpa) DeWaal and his wife Caroline (Kit) were Londoners who apparently migrated to WA to escape post-WWI conditions in London. Both were English born, although his father was a Dutch artist, and she had Irish, English and French ancestry. Hubert was an Adjutant in the RAF and War Office and post-war became an insurance agent and worked actively in charity in London slums with the St Vincent de Paul Society. They arrived in Fremantle on the SS Barrabool on November 11, 1922. The couple lived at 14 Reserve Street, Claremont
