Both were English born, although his father was a Dutch artist, and she had Irish, English and French ancestry. Hubert was an Adjutant in the RAF and War Office and post-war became an insurance agent and worked actively in charity in London slums with the St Vincent de Paul Society. They arrived in Fremantle on the SS Barrabool on November 11, 1922. The couple lived at 14 Reserve Street, Claremont
