Overview

Color print. Side view of the boat shed from the south east. On the eastern side is a weather- board upper half and corrugated iron lower half wall, with pickets across an opening. There is a corrugated iron end wall facing the river and a corrugated iron roof. The houses of Victoria Avenue are to the north and Bethesda Hospital to the west. There is a tree at the front corner of the building and in the foreground, part of a white rail fence on the side of an overgrown block.

Historical information

The Mews family have been involved in boat / ship building in W.A since the 1830's. In 1943 Peter Mews purchased the boatshed at 8 Victoria Ave after the death of Emily Cooper wife of George Cooper (previous owner). In mid 1980s Chris Mews began to realise the importance of the shed to the state's maritime heritage and contacted Claremont Museum for assistance with its preservation. Funds were granted through Federal Government's New Work Opportunities Scheme to relocate and house the boatshed in a new shed on the Museum site.
