WEEKEND MAIL FRAGMENT, 1956
1956Four page section of "Weekend Mail" newspaper, featuring story on Newcastle Gaol by Terry Zanetti.
Story features Moondyne Joe and has images of both Gaol and page from prisoner's register.
The story includes an image of the gaol while it was abandoned and a photocopy of a page from the prisoner register.
Other stories within the pages include a Flash Gordon style science fiction story, a medical story, bridge column, various advertisements for household products and a story about Swanbournes Sunshine Girl.
The newspaper fragment is in poor condition, has been torn, creased and is yellowing.
It is unknown how this fragment came to be located in the Museum Workshops however it is assumed it was donated.

The value of the item considered for accession lies in its research value as a dated document relating to the Newcastle Gaol Museum during its abandonment. The photograph in particular is useful, as there are few images of the gaol before it was restored. While the item is only of local significance, it may in the future provide some information for historical researchers.
