Katanning Flour Mill

Overview

This is a picture of a street intersection and the front view of a three storey brick building. The building has five windows on the second and third floors, the windows on the third floor are all open, on the second floor two windows are open. On the ground floor there is a balcony parapet which runs along three quarters of the front of the building and there are shop banners on the parapet above their shops. On the side view of the building on each floor there are a small window, a doorway and another window. There is a verandah around the front and right hand side of the building with large vertical shop banners on the verandah parapet. In the top centre of the picture, behind the building is a chimney stack. At the front of the building, there is a team of four horses pulling three railway wagons carrying flour and behind this team, two horses pulling one railway wagon across Austral terrace on railway tracks to the railway siding on the right hand side of the picture. These horses and railway wagons are coming from an exit of the building. There is a car parked in front of the building with a man standing beside the car watching the horses. In the centre foreground is a man and a woman carrying a child also watching the horses. On the right hand side of the picture is a West view down Clive Street, next to the large building is another single storey building, then a laneway and then a another single storey building and further down the street are two silos. There are trees lining both sides of the street as well as electricity poles.

Historical information

This picture has been taken from a higher point and gives an overview of the Katanning Flour Mill, the intersection of Austral and Clive streets, mill silos in the background and the railway tracks and horses carting flour from the mill in the foreground.

Inscriptions and markings

At the top of the building is written 'Premier Roller Flour Mills.' At the top front of the building is a white painted sign which has the words 'Swan Roller Flour', with a black swan underneath the word 'Swan'. The remaining words on this sign cannot deciphered. Underneath this sign is another white painted sign with the words 'Merchants Millers Grain -Buyers - Office Argent Street ' written in black.

On the building past the laneway there is a sign on the verandah which reads ' Katanning Flour Mill Elder Smith & Co Limited'

The banner above the first shop on the left hand side of the picture reads 'Motorcar Electrical Repairs A Speciality Battery Recharged' and below this 'Katanning Flour Mills Limited' with a black swan on a white background after the word 'Katanning'.
The banner above the second shop reads 'Piano - Players - Gramophones - Radios - Music and Records' and below this the words 'Nicholsons Service'.
The banner above the third shop reads 'Katanning Flour Mills Limited' and around the corner 'Swan Roller Flour' with a white swan on a black background after the word 'Swan'

Contextual Information

This picture is very important to the development of Katanning as it shows the major industry at the time which was the flour mill, there are horses pulling railway wagons to the railway tracks, motor vehicles in the street and electricity poles.
