Katanning Flour Mill

Overview

This picture shows the front of a three storey brick building which has five windows on the second and third floors. On the ground floor there are three large windows, a small window and then a large doorway. On the side view of the building on each floor there are a small window, a doorway and another window. There is a bull nosed verandah around the front and side of the building. At the front of the building there are wooden posts connected with chains, and a electricity pole on the street pavement on the right hand side of the building. In the top centre of the picture, behind the building is a chimney stack. On the side view of the picture and behind the flour mill is another single storey brick building that appears to be connected to the flour mill.

Inscriptions and markings

At the top of the building is written 'Katanning 1891 Premier Roller Flour Mills.' At the top left front of the building is a white painted sign which has the words 'Premier Roller Flour', with a black swan underneath the word 'Premier'. The remaining words on this sign cannot deciphered. Underneath this sign is another white painted sign with the words 'Merchants Millers Grain Buyers Office ' written in black. The last word on this sign cannot be deciphered.

Statement of significance

Frederick Henry Piesse and his brother Charles Austin gave the contract to build a roller flour mill to Messrs. Thorn, Bower, & Stewart, of York. It was built within fifteen weeks and officially opened on the 4th May 1891 by Hon J.A. Wright the manager of the WA Land Company.
