Image: A painting of a Catalina flying boat. The Catalina has two engines and a registration number 'G-AGFM" on its tail. Under the side cockpit window is "ALTAIR/QANTAS EMPIRE AIRWAYS".

The Catalina is flying over a water airstrip next to land where there are two buildings. Also on the ground are two more Catalina aircraft. One is facing the water airstrip and has a tractor behind it. The second Catalina is partially covered by a hangar. The second building is white and red with "QANTAS EMPIRE AIRWAYS LTD" written on its side. Out of the back of these buildings is scrubland with some trees.

Signature: Along the bottom towards the left corner is the signature "R. SHERRY".

Frame: Double-mount, gold interior frame, linen mount, gold wooden frame.

On the bottom side of the frame is a plaque made from brass with black print reading "PRESENTED TO THE CITY OF SUBIACO BY QANTAS AIRWAYS LIMITED ON JUNE 1983, THE 40th ANNIVERSARY OF THE QANTAS/CATALINA INDIAN OCEAN SERVICE".

Reverse: The painting has a wood backing with hanging cord attached.

Historical information

The Catalina aircraft, RAAF and QANTAS, flew to and from Matilda Bay, Crawley, to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) during World War II. The painting is also significant as it was donated to the City of Subiaco on the anniversary of these flights by QANTAS
