PHOTOGRAPH: QANTAS CATALINA PILOTS
1982Black and white photograph of group of 19 Qantas pilots who flew Perth to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) following the fall of Singapore in the Second World War. They are grouped in front of a plaque near the Catalina launching ramp west of Pelican Point, Crawley. The plaque, mounted on a large rock, commemorates their historic flights, 40 years previously.
The flights between Perth and Ceylon in Qantas Catalina flying boats took more than 24 hours, hence the name 'Flight of the double sunrise'. The planes flew non-stop in radio silence. They maintained communications with Europe, by-passing south-east Asia, which had fallen to the Japanese in WW2
