PHOTOGRAPH: CATALINA COMMEMORATIVE FLY-PAST

1983
Overview

Matt finished colour photograph of Qantas aircraft flying over the Swan River. Several yachts are moored on the river. The plane is in silhouette against white cloud. The flight was timed to coincide with the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the Qantas Catalina air service between Perth and Sri Lanka - then Ceylon, during WW II, following the fall of Singapore to the Japanese.

Historical information

The flights to Sri Lanka were known as the flight of the double sunrise because the planes left before dawn and flew into the sunrise twice before reaching their destination. They flew non stop in radio silence.
