POSTCARD: DOGS (PEKINGESE), 'LOVING BIRTHDAY GREETINGS'
1919Sent by Mr Jim Dennis to his wife Lillian for her 33rd birthday.
Horizontal postcard with five pekingese dogs, including four puppies, with a grey background. The older dog (right) has reddish brown fur and sits upright looking at the viewer. The puppies are have lighter brown fur. The two on the left sit higher up on a green decorative pillow. Above the dogs in curly white font reads: 'Loving Birthday Greetings', the capital letters of which are much more bold, decorative and colourful with swirly borders around them. Below the dogs is a poem in white slanted font which reads: 'Your Birthday once again comes round, / And prompts this greating fond; / May happiness be yours to-day, / And the days beyond.'
The reverse has a handwritten message in black ink which reads: 'To my dear wife from her true loving husband, as a / token of affection on the anniversary of her birthday / Oct 17th 1919 / It's a long time ago since I first sent you some rhyme, / And though we are married I remember the time. / I've tried to assure you a good time through life, / And keep you a happy and truly loved wife, / If I've succeeded its only your due. / For you have deserved more than I could do for you, / I think I'm the luckiest man in the state. / For I know that no man has a better help-mate. / Your Jim 17/10/19'
