GOLF COURSE VIEWS LATE 1976

1976
Overview

This set of photographs shows several views of the Melville Glades golf course. The photographs are not identified but the processing date on the rear of all of them is January 1977. This suggests that they were taken in late 1976, particularly as the first one shows a Christmas tree in full bloom which normally occurs in November and December of each year.

1. Christmas Trees in full bloom beside an unknown fairway.

The rest of the set appears to shows views of changes to the 17th and 18th holes when they were converted from a par 5 / par 3 finish to par 3 par 5.

2, 3. Two photos – both with similar views towards the new 17th hole.

4. Distant view from 16th green towards new 17th hole.

5, 6. Two closer views from 16th green towards new 17th hole with lake just visible on the lhs of the image.

7. Even closer view of new 17th hole and green.

8. Believed to be the original 17th par five green with bunkers on the left and right. In the distance is a tree and grass tree (blackboy) in the middle of the fairway.

9. This appears to be the tee for the original 18th hole par three. Tee markers and a seat are seen on the rhs of the image. The near view shows a roped-off area, perhaps where works were to occur to remove the old 17th green. The grass tree is seen again on the left of the picture. This is likely to be the same grass tree left in the middle of the18th fairway that was the subject of much discussion as to whether it should be removed, and it was eventually. Glimpses of the clubhouse are perhaps visible through the trees on the rhs.

The photographs were removed from an album where they were adhered to the cardboard backing pages. The album contained several sets of photographs believed to have been taken by Geoff Holmes, MGGC President in 1976-77.
