CULHAM HOMESTEAD, TOODYAY

Subcollections
Overview

A black & white photo of what is believed to be the second homestead at "Culham", built 1847. The third home, built in 1856, is the double storey building in the background.
The lower level of the front house has a "thatched" roof with 2 brick chimneys at either end.
The higher brick 2-storeyed house at the rear has a wooden shingled roof on the back of which is a double brick chimney. Three windows & four doors are seen.
Surrounding the lower 2/3 of front house is a bush wood fence & gate to the right.
Next to the gate, in front of a climbing plant is a group of eight small children, seven in frocks & pinafores and one in pants suit. With them are two adults (ladies) in long dresses and hats.
A small shed is to the left of photo.

Historical information

“There have been four houses on the site; the first a cottage known as 'Shepherds Hut', then a larger mud brick house was built beside the Toodyay Brook. A two‐storey house was built alongside the mud brick house with George Henry Hasell as the contractor. Finally, another house was built incorporating the 'Shepherds Hut'.

It is believed the structures shown in this photo were the houses built beside the Toodyay Brook which flooded in 1872. The cellar of the two-storey house was flooded, leading Squire Phillips to build a new home on higher ground, incorporating the sturdy original 'Shepherd's Hut'. This house was single-storeyed because Phillips was plagued with gout and didn't like climbing stairs. Ref: Toodyay Homesteads by Rica Erickson and Robyn Taylor
