Renowned Australian aviation artist, Norman Clifford produced a profile of A4397 "Sylvia" which is in the collection. This photograph formerly belonged to Norman Clifford.
Captain Reginald George David Francis was a chemist from Footscray, Victoria, prior to enlistment.
2nd Lieutenant Francis embarked from Melbourne with B Flight, No. 4 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps (A.F.C.) aboard RMS Omrah on 17 January 1917.
During his service he was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C.). "During two consecutive days this officer carried out most valuable work in ranging on batteries. Flying eight and a half hours the first day and four hours the second, he successfully ranged our artillery on seven hostile batteries. In co-operating with our artillery he shows conspicuous bravery and marked ability."
He returned to Australia on 5 May 1919.
During the Second World War Reginald Francis served as a Wing Commander with the R.A.A.F.
Norman Clifford is one of Australia's foremost aviation artists. His works are held in the R.A.A.F. Museum at Point Cook, the Australian War Memorial and in many other public and private collections.
