PHOTOGRAPH (COPY): MRS DAGLISH OPENING SUBIACO CROQUET CLUB, 1904
1904This black and white copy of a photograph shows the opening day at the Subiaco Croquet Club, which was predominately a ladies croquet club. Mayor Henry Daglish stands in the centre of the image, watching his wife prepare to play the first game. The croquet lawn is surrounded by a cyclone wire fence and a number of spectators, mostly women, are standing around the edges. The ladies wear long frocks with sun bonnets and carry parasols, while the men are wearing suits with straw boaters. There are two children sittings watching the events. There is also a brick building behind the spectators.
In the forefront, Mrs Daglish stands with two other women. Mrs Daglish wears a long pale dress with puffed sleeves, a bonnet and veil. She is the only person holding a croquet mallet, which has been decorated with a ribbon tied around it in a bow. The lady next to her is also wearing a pale coloured dress, and holds a parosol above their heads. Next to her stands another woman, this time wearing an all black dress, veil and hat.

Croquet Club was located in the council gardens, in front of where the museum and council offices now stand. The club started on the north-east corner of Subiaco Gardens and was the first bowling club of Subiaco. The club expanded and was granted land at the south-west corner. Further extended activities to the corner of Nicholson Road.

Details
This image is significant as it records an important moment in this history of Subiaco, the establishment of a woman's sporting club. It is also significant in capturing some of the practices and fashions of the period, and the work of one of Subiaco's early Mayoresses, which are not always documented in photographs.
