GENERAL EMBROIDERY, SAMPLER

Overview

Embroidered in 1980s, this sampler on evenweave linen by Coral, a Life Member of the Guild and tutor to illustrate the variety of patterns and designs which can be created using only two stitches – straight and looped.

The sampler is divided into two. The left hand side has straight stitches which include darning, Holbein Stitch and four sided stitch of pulled fabric technique and the many combinations. The right hand side has variations of looped stitch – chain, buttonhole, feather, lazy-daisy and knotted stitches and the various combinations.

The sampler, with colourful cotton backing fabric, served a useful purpose in that it was used as a container for Coral’s current work in progress. A cardboard roll was slipped into a pocket at the top, enabling the project to be rolled safely when not in use, to avoid folds and creases.
