A Government Work Party was based at the Bootenal Spring on the northern part of the Front Greenough Flats and were responsible for building roads. George Shenton & Co were a major commercial business at Geraldton, and employed Newton Waldeck, brother-in-law of John Maley, miller at Greenough. Valentine Trew was a ticket-of-leave man who worked for Maley from 1865-68.
