B/W Print of framed photo of elderly, Louisa Cargeeg at Keswick, 20 Parry Street. She is wearing an ankle length, light, loose coat with contrasting facings over a loose-fitting dress with crossover bodice trimmed with lace, and a long strand of beads. Her high-crowned hat has a wide ribbon trim and narrow brim and she is wearing spectacles. She has a walking stick in her right hand and is standing beside steps leading down to a path beside a verandah with bull-nosed roof, turned post, wooden valance and blind. Handwritten on the mount is [Yrs. Sincerely/ L.J. Cargeeg].

Historical information

Louisa Jane Cargeeg (nee Selway) was born in South Australia in 1852. She and her husband, George Harold Cargeeg sailed from Adelaide on the SS Gabbo, arriving in Fremantle on 15 April, 1895, with their 8 children, all born in Adelaide, South Australia.

The family lived in Adelaide Tce and later Stirling Street, Perth, before purchasing The Grange in 1907. They subsequently sold parts of the large property through 'Cargeeg Bros Real Estate' which was a business belonging to their sons Harold and Garfield and then in 1913, exchanged 11 acres for a farming property Parkfield for their sons Victor and Reginald.

They retained 3 blocks in Parry Street and built Keswick at 20 Parry Street, Claremont (where son Harold Cargeeg lived until about 1960) and a home for daughter Daisy and husband William Ellery at 18 Parry Street. Parkfield farm was sold in 1924 after the death of three sons.

She died in WA on 5 June, 1935.
