Printed beneath [BROCKWAY 1934-35].(i) A youngish man with soft curly hair and a bushy moustache, he is wearing a white stiff-fronted shirt with wing collar and a bow tie. Is jacket is unbuttoned revealing a buttoned waistcoat. (Understood to be 1902 - 03).

Historical information

Walter St Claire Brockway was born at Bradford, Yorkshire, England 17 January 1864, he went to Devon at the age of 8. He was articled to civil engineering profession in Bendigo, Victoria. Walter married Harriet Emily Clarey (1864 -1949) in Victoria in 1883 and the couple arrived in Western Australia in 1894.

Accepted appointment of Town Clerk and engineer to Claremont Municipal Council in 1899. Brockway was also the engineer for Cottelsoe Council. He resigned from both and established himself in practice in Perth in 1909. Brockway was elected as a Claremont Councillor from 1909-1911 and then Mayor from 1911-12. Lived at 23 Rockton Rd.

Interested in the fruit industry, Brockway had an orchard at Kelmscott and 1000 acres of land at Wickepin where he has a flock of strong wool merinos. He was a Justice of Peace for Perth magisterial district and a member of the Liberal League.

Retired 1935.

Children: George Ernest Emerson (1901-1973), Walter St Clair (c1888-1966), Una, Harriet Amy, Eirey, Eric Lancelot Leighton (b.1903), Blanche Chesterton., Ilma Jean., Muriel, Archie Francis Howard (1906 - 1982) and Gwenyeva Helene (b.1904 - 1965)
