COMMEMORATIVE PLATE CITY OF SWANSEA

Overview

A circular white ceramic plate. The Coat of Arms of the City of Swansea is in the centre of the plate. The coat of arms features a castle with a turret on either side and a portcullis. Above is a yellow shield with the Red Dragon inside. Beneath the castle are alternating blue and white wavy lines meant to represent waves. The shield, castle and lines are inside a blue shield.
On the opposite sides of the blue shield wearing yellow collars are a lion and a dragon respectively. They are holding the blue shield. Above and inbetween them is a bird holding a fish in its beak and talons.
Beneath the blue shield and connecting to the lion and dragon feet is a gold swirl in the style of ribbon with text that reads: [FLOREAT] and [SWANSEA].
Separating the inner and outer parts of the plate is a gold ring.
The words [Dinas Abertawe] and [City of Swansea] are on the top and bottom edges of the plate respectively.
There is a serpentine pattern in red and yellow on the left and right edges of the plate.

Historical information

This plate was given to Jeff and Margaret Munn in 1988 while on holidays in Wales. Jeff and Margaret originated from Wales and migrated to Australia in the 1960s. At the time of his holiday Jeff was deputy major of the COA and had organised a visit to the City of Swansea where he was gifted the plate.
Once he returned Jeff presented the plate to the COA and it was displayed above the Councillors bar until the early 2000s when the bar was renovated. The plate was then transferred to the History House Museum collection.
