Mark Ettles was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1966 and started playing baseball with the South Perth Baseball Club. In his early baseball career as a pitcher, he was a member of the WA Brewers team that won the 1985 Claxton Shield Series (an Australian national baseball competition).
In 1989 the first Australian Baseball League was formed, and the Perth Heat baseball team was founded. Mark was a member of Perth Heat from 1991-1998, during which time the team won the national championships in 1990/91 and 1996/97.
Mark was a Team Australia member in 1997 at the Intercontinental Cup in Barcelona, where they won a Bronze Medal. He was on the Australian team in Japan in 1999 and in 2000 pitched at the Sydney Olympic Games.
Mark developed a baseball career in the United States with the Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres and was the first Western Australian to play Major League Baseball (MLB). He later finished his career in the Korean Professional League.

In 2018 Mark Ettles was inducted into the Australian Baseball Hall of Fame and in 2021 he was an inaugural inductee into the Western Australian Baseball WA Hall of Fame.

This photograph depicts Mark Ettles as a young pitcher whose early sporting prowess was developed through the ranks of junior and senior Western Australian baseball clubs. He went on to represent his home State and Australia nationally and internationally, and was the first Western Australian to play Major League Baseball in the US. He is an inductee in two baseball Halls of Fame. The photograph has impeccable provenance.
