Overview

A coloured photograph of Scott Cameron, pitcher for the Western Australian Brewers baseball team in wind-up phase and wearing the Brewers' playing uniform. The shirt and trousers are yellow with a single black band around the shirt sleeves and neckline and two black bands around the waist and down the outside trouser legs. The undershirt and stirrups are black, with white socks. Written across the front of the top is the name of the team in black letters with white outlines. On the lower left quadrant of the top is a black swan with the name of the major sponsor (Swan) in red. The baseball cap is black with the letters 'WA' in yellow on the front of the crown.

Historical information

The Western Australian State baseball team was re-branded 'The Brewers' in 1984 and was sponsored by the Swan Brewery Company.

Scott Cameron played for the Brewers during the 1980s in the Claxton Shield national championships. He was a representative in the Australian national team in the 1985 Intercontinental Cup and the 1988 Olympics as a pitcher-outfielder. He was the first captain of the Perth Heat and started the first game in Australian Baseball League history when the league opened in 1989; he got the first strikeout as well. Contextual Information

The re-branding of the State baseball team was an attempt at privatisation and commercialisation, with a bright coloured uniform and commercial trappings previously unseen in Claxton Shield competition. Re-branding around a commercial and more professional aura took baseball to another level, comparable to other Australian professional sports.

The photograph was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by Paul Tye.

Statement of significance

The commercial enterprise approach was the forerunner to later Australian Baseball League teams in the national league competition. It raised baseball to another level.
