Joseph Langsford 50th Anniversary Claremont Town Council
1948Joseph Wood Langsford in a 3 piece suit, hand in pocket, at microphone on canvas covered platform in Claremont Park on occasion of 50th anniversary of Claremont Town Council. Seven men in suits sitting on the dais in cane chairs. Small groups of adults and several children in background. Some bunting strung to a pine tree and dilapidated picket fence of tennis bowling club at rear.
Joseph Wood Langsford (1865-1957) was born in South Australia, son of John Langsford and Mary Ann Ware.
Attended Prince Alfred College. After leaving school found work with the AMP Society. In 1884 was sent to Western Australia to work in AMP's Perth office.
Married Agnes Jane Read in Fremantle in 1888.
They had five children: Eckersley Wood (b.1892), Holberry Joseph (b.1894), Arthur Norwood (b.1889), Claude Nerwington (1891) and Rita Grace (b.1897).
Claremont Mayor from 1899-1901. Justice of the Peace, Claremont.
Member of the Legislative Council from 1904-1911.
In 1908, Notre Dame Street was renamed Langsford Street to commemorate his service to the local community.
