Decorative Urn
Urn has elaborately decorative metal handle, spout and bass above and below. Centre rounded porcelain with decorative hand painted flowers and leaves design.
The embossed base has repeated pattern of sea serpent, trident and face of Poseidon.
The three section of the urn are held in place by metal rod held in place with bolts at top and base.
The central porcelain section with flower and leaf design has been painted by hand. The tips of the larger flowers and leaves are blue which fades into sage green for lower part of petals and leaves. Outer part of smaller petals are white then sage green owards the centre which is deep blue.
Most outer edges of pattern are outlined in a orange/gold line. Smaller white flowers are not outlined. There are fewer background leaves in this design than the 24.2 urn.
The reverse side of urn has a more detailed sage green leaf pattern than the similar urn from the same donor.
While the base design is identical to 24.2 it appears different artists have applied the paint. There is a differing interpretation in use of blue, in application of colours, and outlining. This is even more apparent in application of leaf design particularly on reverse side of urns.
Urns were originally on display in the Osborne Hotel. In 1901, Mother Gonzaga Barry bought the Osborne Hotel for a new boarding school. It was known as Loreto Claremont. In 1977 Loreto Claremont was amalgamated with St Louis College to become John XXIII College. John XXIII moved to a new site in 1986 and the Claremont site was sold. The urns were transferred to Loreto Nedlands
