Overview

Saddle, military style built on a metal, rawhide and wooden tree with extended panel. White metal fittings. The panel flocking has entirely disintegrated, however there is evidence of yellow felt prior to cleaning. Three leather parts have become detached from the main body of the saddle. These are stamped "5137", The cantle (rear) leather is stamped "368". The tree has been twisted, probably in use.

Historical information

This saddle has been build on a framework or 'tree' made from rawhide stritched between wooden panels joined by metal arches. The long wooden panels are designed to spread the weight of the rider and equipment carried over a large area of the hors's back, easing the load. They were once covered in soft yellow felt 28/1/2014 piece of leather detached from saddle stored at ASR R1/2 B4.
