Overview

Woodworking plane with adjustable wooden handles (threaded wooden screws) used by carpenters to cut grooves and rebates into timber.
Manufacturer: A. Mathieson & Son, Glasgow & Edinburgh
Model number: No. 8
There are various stamped marks on the ends of the plane believed to indicate the plane's manufacturer & model number, the merchant who imported it into Australia and sold it, and possibly the initials of a previous owner.

Historical information

A. Mathieson & Son were a well-known Scottish firm of plane and edge-tool makers based in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Some of the markings on this plane are believed to indicate the following:
The trademark for the Mathieson company: A star above a crescent, with the name and location of the Mathieson company above and below (forming the shape of an eye). Mathieson acquired exclusive rights to use this mark from 1868.
No.8: The model number, possibly representing the width of the cutter in sixteenths of an inch.
A.G. Gardiner: Believed to be associated with the primary retail corporation of W. Gardiner & Son- possibly a specific generation or localized branch of the family firm, a major colonial importer and hardware merchant in Australia during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The merchant's name was stamped onto the tool either by the manufacturer in the UK or upon its arrival in Australia. In 1926 W. Gardiner & Son amalgamated with Sargood Bros. becoming Sargood Gardiner Ltd.
SV (or AS if viewed upside down): believed to be the initials of a previous owner, stamped on both ends of the plane.
