SADDLE BAG PANNIERS

Overview

Constructed on a wooden panelled tree with an arched metal framework, forming four hooks. The metal framework has pieces of leather stretched between the two arches, the panels are joined with twisted leather thonging. They are stuffed with straw, which is contoured and quilted with stitching reinforced by leather washers on the leather side.

Historical information

designed to enable horses to carry heavy weights by spreading the load over a large surface area of the back. People would often need to travel long distances over difficult terrain to herd their sheep and cattle.
