QUILTING, DRESS

Overview

This cream coloured woollen baby garment is unlike any in the Collection. It is of very simple construction with two pieces of fabric. There is no join/seam at the back. The back of the garment is open and cotton tapes in two places each side, tie and close the garment when worn. The top of the garment is a 105mm deep yoke, shaped for neck and armholes, edged with buttonhole stitch in wool yarn. Beneath one armhole, is large hole, 80mm edged with buttonhole stitch. When the garment is worn, one side of the yoke with a cotton tape would pass through this hole to be tied with tape from the other side of the yoke to keep the garment closed.
The centre front of the yoke has two or three layers of fabric, machine quilted.
Beneath the yoke, a rectangular piece of fabric with two pleats centre front.
Feather stitch around the perimeter of the skirt in woollen yarn.
French seams stitched down with herringbone stitch in sewing cotton thread. There are three holes, eaten by moths.

It is possible that woollen baby garment 2022.13 could have been worn under this one.
Shoulder straps created to save fabric.
