Overview

Birmingham United Hospital Queen Elizabeth Hospital metal and enamel badge presented to Nurse E.E. Webb.
it features an octagonal, gold-toned base metal frame with an inner cut-out. The outer border is covered in white enamel and inscribed with the words 'BIRMINGHAM UNITED HOSPITAL' on the upper arches and 'QUEEN ELIZABETH HOSPITAL' on the lower arches.
The inner crest of the central shield is split into distinct enameled sections, with the top half having a white background featuring two lions flanking a central blue dolphin.The bottom-left half has a yellow background featuring a red gryphon and the bottom-right half has a blue background featuring a yellow wheat sheaf.
The octagonal medal hangs from a matching, rectangular brass suspension bar pin.
The reverse is engraved with the name 'Nurse E.E. Webb.' There is some discoloration and vertigris present on the badge due to age. There is no maker's mark.

Historical information

This badge was presented to Nurse Edith Elizabeth Webb who qualified for her nursing certificate after studying at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham in May 1943. She was born on 18 November 1919 in Croydon, Greater London. She was still registered as a nurse in 1962. She married Eric Godfrey Hughes on 21 August 1945 in Cairo, Egypt, and they went on to have four sons. She died in Basford, Nottinghamshire, England in August 2006, aged 86
Given that she qualified in 1943 and was married and changed her surname in 1945, this badge dates to 1943-44.

A second registration badge awarded to Edith is also held in the collection. Both badges would have been awarded at the same time - one from the Royal College of Nursing when she completed her training and became registered, and this one from the hospital where she trained.
