The General Nursing Council for England and Wales badge presented to E.E. Webb 1943

c. 1943
Overview

State Registered Nurse (SRN) silver tone metal and enamel qualification badge issued by the General Nursing Council for England and Wales to E.E. Webb on 28 May 1943.
The centre of the badge depicts a silver figure representing a traditional nurse or a classical figure of healing, flanked by decorative floral sprigs. This is surrounded by a vibrant dark blue enamel band containing the capitalised silver inscription: 'THE GENERAL NURSING COUNCIL FOR ENGLAND & WALES'. To the outside of this is a stylised silver border resembling a Tudor rose pattern with detailed floral embellishments between the petals.
The reverse has the maker's details at the top, under which are the recipient's name, registration number and date of qualification.
There is a metal loop at the bottom through which a fine-link metal safety chain attaches the main medallion to a matching brass-colored safety pin to prevent losing the badge from a uniform fabric.

Historical information

This registration badge was presented to Edith Elizabeth Webb on 28 May 1943. She was born on 18 November 1919 in Croydon, Greater London. She qualified for her nursing certificate after studying at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. She was still registered as a nurse in 1962. She married Eric Godfrey Hughes on 21 August 1945 in Cairo, Egypt, and they went on to have four sons. She died in Basford, Nottinghamshire, England in August 2006, aged 86

These badges were awarded to nurses upon completing their training and registering with the General Nursing Council for England and Wales between 1919 and 1983.

A second badge awarded to Edith is also held in the collection. Both badges would have been awarded at the same time - this one from the Royal College of Nursing when she completed her training and became registered, and the other from the hospital where she trained.
