Historical information

The Queen's Institute of District Nursing began as Queen Victoria’s Jubilee Institute for Nurses in 1887 during Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. It was officially renamed the Queen’s Institute of District Nursing in 1928, before becoming the Queen's Nursing Institute (QNI) later on.

This badge covers a 21 year period of service from 1920-1941 (based on the hallmarks). Although it hasn't been possible to identify Winifred L. Bingham, she is known to have been working through a very difficult period in history - from just post-World War One (when the influenza pandemic was raging) through the Great Depression and into World War Two.

These badges were orihginally produced in gold. However, due to the wartime restrictions when this badge was presented in 1941, it has been made with the lesser quality silver.
