WOODEN BOX CONTAINING GLASS SLIDES

c. 1915 - 1922
Overview

Rectangular wooden box, open topped with hinged metal bands to retain the lid. Also has one leather strap on one end.
Lid is a shallower, open rectangular box, and is located by two dowels at one end and a single dowel on the other end.
Both the base and the lid have padded strips to support the glass slides.
The box contains a total of 69 glass slides.
As shown by the sheet in Significance file at Birtwistle Library, the slides are numbered 32 to 91 and have images on the system, showing scenery and aspects of life on the Solomon Islands. Slides 44, 55, 58, 59, 69, 71, 80 and 81 are missing.
There are ten additional slides on the same theme which are not imaged. Additionally, there are three showing scenes from the 1st World War.

Historical information

Ivor T. Birtwistle was born in Victoria and later moved to Perth with his family. He started a career in newspapers in 1908, when he worked as an office boy for the editor of the Western Mail until 1912. Ivor T Birtwistle served in Gallipoli, in Egypt and at the Somme (France), where he was severely shell-shocked on 28th July 1916. Following this he was discharged in Melbourne on 22nd June 1917. An aunt gave him money to travel to the Solomon Islands to recuperate (Australian Dictionary of Biography).
