Dale Hughes' 1960s Western Australian State baseball team cap
c. 1970A 1970s Western Australian State baseball team cap in the State colours of black and yellow. The crown, top button and visor of the cap are of black woollen fabric. Embroidered in yellow thread on the front of the crown are the letters 'W.A.' above two crossed baseball bats. The crown is made up of six panels with four metal eyelets for ventilation. The underside of the visor is lined with green cotton fabric. The inside of the crown has a brown vinyl sweatband and is lined with tan and black, houndstooth-patterned cotton fabric.
This State team cap dates from the early 1970s and belonged to Dale Hughes, a prodigious baseballer who represented Western Australia in the Australian national Claxton Shield Series for 10 years in the 1960s and 1970s.

The cap was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by the family of Dale Hughes and adds to the Museum's collection of WA Claxton Shield caps which date from the 1930s.
As well as representing Western Australia in many national championships, Hughes also represented Australia on several occasions. In 1969 he was in the first Australian team to travel overseas, competing in Manilla in the Philippines.
A rare and well-provenanced item from a 1970s Western Australian State baseball team uniform. Its historic and social significance is enhanced because of the wearer of the cap, who was an outstanding Western Australian baseball player.
