CROCHET, BAG

c. 1900
Overview

This striking hand crocheted lady’s hand bag, is a contemporary version of reticules, lady’s purses, a popular fashion accessory of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The little bag was purchased at an Op Shop in Perth in 2014.

The foundation of the bag is a netted fabric onto which has been attached small rings. These rings have been crocheted around with golden silky yarn, and edged with black and gold beads.

The slit opening of the bag has a double crochet edge. Around the top of the bag are crocheted loops through which a braided cord is threaded to close the bag. The ends of the cord have a tassel formed with a crocheted covered bead, and strands of black seed beads. There is also a tassell at the base of the bag. Black plastic circular handle.
