CHAIN, BAG

c. 1890 - 1899
Overview

Dainty silver chain mesh purse with ornate silver frame and a twist metal clip fastening made in England in 1880/90s.

In centre back is chain link through which a cord could be attached to hang the purse from lady’s finger, belt or around her neck.

At this time, narrow waists for ladies were the height of fashion. Bags were small, hung from the waist drawing attention to the well cared for hands and slender waists. It also meant the hands were left free to lift a long skirt, carry a muff or parasol. A revival of the medieval chatelaine in 1700s.
