1951 West Australian State baseball team member's travel case

Overview

This 1951 West Australian State baseball team member's travel case is made of brown leather with reinforced corners and a leather handle. The inside rim of the case has metal reinforcements and there are two metal lockable latches to secure the case. The inside lining is of dark brown cotton fabric and the bottom of the case is lined with newspapers. Stuck to the outside lid of the suitcase are two paper passenger stickers with the handwritten passenger's name visible on them both. The stickers state that the passenger is a member of the 1951 Western Australian Baseball Team. One sticker is partly obscured by the second sticker, which indicates the passenger was travelling to Perth.

Historical information

1951 was the Jubilee Year to commemorate 50 years since the Federation of the States of Australia into the Commonwealth of Australia. The 1951 interstate baseball championship was therefore called the Commonwealth Jubilee Baseball Championship Series. It was the 12th annual Claxton Shield, and was held in Adelaide from 28 July to 4 August. The participants were hosts South Australia, defending champions New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland. The series was won by an undefeated New South Wales, their sixth Shield title.

Contextual Information

This suitcase belonged to Gil Eddington who was assistant manager of the 1951 Western Australian State baseball team. The two stickers on the case were for the team's outward journey from Perth to Adelaide and their return journey to Perth. In 1952 Gil was manager of the Western Australian team when they won their first Claxton Shield title. He was also a State selector.

Gil Eddington's suitcase was loaned to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by his daughter Meredith Eddington.
