Overview

A baseball from the 1950 Australian Baseball Championship Series. The brown leather ball has red and black stitched seams. Handwritten in black ink are signatures of team members from the five competing State teams.

Historical information

The 1950 Claxton Shield was the 11th annual Claxton Shield; it was held in Sydney, New South Wales from July 29 to August 5. The participants were South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland. The series was won by New South Wales, their fifth Shield title.

Queensland secured its first Claxton Shield win on July 30 when they defeated Western Australia 2–1 in a 15-inning game. At that time, it was the longest Shield game in history and was played in front of 10,000 spectators who braved the rainy July weather.

This baseball, donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by the family of Western Australian team member George Dickinson, is signed by players from all five competing States. The Western Australian signatures are: G. Shom (Capt.), E.C. Halse (Mgr), G. Dickinson, A. Hickinbotham (Vice-capt.), R. Gooch, A. Bell, R. Frankish, W. Gill, R. Booth, R. Dellar, R. Featherby, B. Jeffreys, J. Dore.

Three members of the Western Australian team were selected in the 1950 All-Australia team. They were A. Hickinbotham (catcher), A. Bell (first base) and G. Dickinson (utility).
