GENERAL EMBROIDERY,PICTURE
Chinese costume embroidery from 19th century, pre Chinese Cultural Revolution. This finely executed embroidery consists of 2 lower sections of sleeves, once part of a Chinese rob, which have been joined to create an embroidered panel. The cream silk satin background is lined with peach cotton fabric marked with a Chinese symbol and edged with a very fragile woven indigo band. The embroidery gives an overall impression of shades of blue, with motifs of volcanoes, bats, bridges, prunus, peonies, flower basket on 3 legs, house/ temple. The colouring suggests a seasonal use. Many of the areas worked in black are missing or extremely damaged.
