ARMY NCO'S SCHOOL, CLAREMONT DRILL HALL
B/W print. A group of Non Commissioned Officers with their instructors in four rows outside the the main entrance of the Claremont Drill Hall. The brick building has a wooden portico with central doors and glass fanlight. There is a small window on either side of the door.
The Claremont Drill Hall was between Stirling Highway and St Quentin Avenue. Originally a roller skating rink, it became a drill hall during WWI. The lovccation was listed in postal directories as 'Forty-fourth Battalion Drill Hall and Area Office'(Australian Army Canteens Service also shown at same address.).
After WWII, the building was taken over by Air Force until early 1990s. A Vampire aircraft mounted on a plinth on the highway frontage became a landmark and gave rise to the name Avion Way when the site was redeveloped.
